    Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) talked about the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, a federal initiative that provides assistance and services to elderly Americans. As most of you know, this is the fifth hearing that we have held on the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. Last week, the subcommittee held three very informative field hearings: one in Alhambra, in ranking member Martinez's district; one in Santa Clarita, my district, and one in North Platte, Nebraska, Mr. Barrett's district.

    Congress passed the Older Americans Act (OAA) in in response to concern by policymakers about a lack of community social services for older persons. The original legislation established authority for grants to states for community planning and social services, research and development projects, and personnel training in the field of aging.   President Obama signed the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act of into law today, reaffirming our nation’s commitment to the health and well-being of older adults. Earlier this year, the President called on Congress to reauthorize this important legislation as part of his remarks at the White House Conference on Aging.
